Nests

The trees where I grew up did not shed in fall. It is spring now, in Massachusetts, and the trees are still bare. This is a time when I like looking for nests, which are much easier to spot before the trees have opened. It's funny how some beautiful old trees have none, but then you find one clinging determinedly to a scraggy little tree by the roadside. How do they pick their spots, the birds or squirrels or whatever is nesting up there? If I had seen the nests so clearly when I was a kid, I would have been twenty feet off the ground, trying to peek in them or start a collection of abandoned ones. This is a thought I am not tempted to share with my tree climbing age kids!
